Department of Hydrology

The Department of Hydrology is one among the 19 academic departments of the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, formerly known as the University of Roorkee, which was established as the Roorkee College in 1847. The Department of Hydrology is one among the various departments dealing with water related studies at I.I.T. Roorkee (like Water Resources Development & Management Department, Department of Civil Engineering, and Alternate Hydro Energy Centre) set up for offering courses in theoretical and applied hydrology. The Department came into existence with the inception of the International Post Graduate Course in Hydrology in 1972, being the first such a programme in a developing country. The courses, offered by the department are presently sponsored by the Government of India and the UNESCO. So far a total of 687 trainee officers including 261 foreign trainees officers from 34 countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America have participated in the programme.
