Indian Institutes of Technology - IIT Roorkee

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (Formerly University of Roorkee) is the oldest and the largest Civil Engineering Department in the country. It was established on October 19, 1847 as the Thomason College and was given the status of a full-fledged University in 1948. The department has in the past produced several eminent engineers who have made notable contributions in the planning and execution of Civil Engineering project in most part of India as well in other developing countries.

The department offers a four year course leading to the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Although the department has prided itself on the quality of its undergraduate programmes, the department also realized quite early the importance of keeping pace with the latest development in engineering education. Thus at present the department offers one and a half year courses in Master's Degree .

The research programmes of the department are funded by various agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, MOST, ISRO, MHRD, AICTE, etc. Research fellows working on these programmes are allowed to register for the ph. D. provided they fulfill the qualifications set for them. Teachers of other engineering colleges also carry out research at the department, leading to Ph. D. Degree under the Quality Improvement programme. The department offers Ph. D. programmes in all the disciplines listed earlier. So far, over-three hundred Ph. D. Degrees have been awarded and over fifty five Ph. D. Scholars are presently pursuing their research.

The faculty of the department has always remained in the forefront by exploring new areas and providing guidance in frontal areas. Recognizing the excellent work carried out by the faculty, UGC provided assistance to the department through UGC-Special Assistance programme and COSIST Programmes. MHRD and AICTE also provide assistance to the department in specialized areas through ten centres namely, Centre of Environmental Engineering, Remote Sensing, Transportation Engineering, Wind Engineering, Hydraulics, Appropriate Technology for Rural Development, Appropriate Technology for Development of Hill Regions, Composite material, Off Shore Engineering and Computer Aided Design.

The faculty of the department continues to strive loftier by exploring new frontiers of knowledge, providing the latest technical knowledge to the students and rendering technical advice on live engineering problems.
