CBSE toppers poised to fly

City students came out with flying colours in CBSE Class XII, with those from the commerce stream giving their science counterparts a run for their money.

But for most of the citys toppers, its time to end academic ties with Kolkata. Armed with high grades, they are ready to seek admission to the best institutes that are invariably outside the city.

Commerce student Harsh Drolia of Birla High School, the probable city topper who scored 96.2%, has no intention of studying in Kolkata. Science topper Kushal Agarwal from Lakshmipat Singhania Academy is eyeing an IIT berth while humanities topper M Saraswati of Apeejay School is bent on joining St Stephens

Learning from India’s Student-Teacher Dynamic

The gurunath lies within the grounds of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras, the largest city in southern India. The beautiful name means teachers village. Here students can buy chai, Indian tea, or bread for two rupees or three rupees. The area is usually crowded until one or two in the morning with students appeasing their hunger and endlessly talking, debating and discussing. There are gurunaths at prestigious Indian universities all over the country, such as the University of Delhi, and the atmosphere is always the same. Few people anywhere like to debate more than Indian students, it seems.

Not long ago I had a chance to talk with some students at IITs gurunath, and we had a lively discussion about IITs competitive edge. During the discussion, the words guru and shisa popped up. Kumar used them when his classmate in the electric engineering department, Mittal, mentioned something. Kumar meant that he had learned from Mittal.

Guru and shisa mean teacher and student in Sanskrit. The IIT students said that the culture of guru and shisa is one of the secrets of Indias students, who are said to be the best debaters in the world. The words were coined in the process of teaching and learning the Vedas, the sacred texts of Indias Brahmanism. The concept is slightly different from teacher-student relationship we understand. In India it refers to the way students learn from their teachers by discussion, rather than just a unidirectional, teacher-to-student passing of information. Its one of the strong points of the Indian education system, and it works far better than the simple cramming method

Who will man the additional IITs?

In recent months at least two new institutes named as Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) modelled after IISc have been inaugurated. This is justifiable since science education and research badly needs a good boost as the country produces enough PhDs in sciences to staff these new institutions.

In addition, an equally important decision has been taken in recent years, namely to open three more IITs with plans to create 20 more in the next 5-year plan. With regards to this decision, however, several questions need to be raised. Specifically, do we have enough trained and qualified manpower to staff these new IITs as well as the requisite infrastructure in new facilities and services?

In a resource-constrained country like ours, we need to optimise our resources and be effective especially in technical education, an issue addressed in this article.

IIT names new president

The trustees at the Illinois Institute of Technology have selected a chemical engineering academic to be the schools eighth president.

John Anderson, 61, currently provost of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, will start as the Illinois Institute of Technologys (IIT) president on Aug. 1. He replaces Lew Collens, who is retiring after 16 years as leader of the school, which includes the Chicago-Kent College of Law and the Stuart School of Business.

A look back at the presidency of Lew Collens

As Lew Collens prepares to give his final commencement address on May 12, we look back at his career at the university and, in particular, the 17 years he has served as president. In addition to reviewing IITs academic, enrollment and financial milestones achieved during Collens tenure, we will share some thoughts and insights from various members of the university community about the legacy that he leaves behind.

Prior to joining IIT, Collens, 68, practiced law in Chicago and Washington, D.C., and was co-founder and chairman of BAR/BRI Educational Publishing Company. Collens served as a Law and Humanities Fellow at Harvard Law School and taught corporate and securities law at IITs Chicago-Kent College of Law. He was named dean of the law school in 1974 and was appointed president of IIT in 1990.

Collens announced his plans to retire last September at the end of this academic year. In his announcement, he reflected on what it has meant to him serving as IIT President. Serving as president for the past [17] years at a university as historically distinguished as IIT has been intellectually challenging, professionally rewarding, and a great personal privilege. I am in awe of the men and women I have come to know at IIT who dedicate their lives to the education of tomorrows doers, thinkers, visionaries, and leaders.

An uphill task called examination

Cracking an entrance examination for the Indian Institute of Technology has always been an uphill task. The kind of pressure – both from parents and teachers – the students have to put up with, the amount of hard work needed and the huge burden of expectations they have to live up to are some of the things that everyone who has appeared for an IIT entrance paper would know.

A bunch of young people who have studied at some of the top institutions of the country have captured this pre-entrance experience of students through a new play, Padai, Masti aur Woh.

The play has been conceptualised by the alumni of Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, and Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi.

Useful tips and apt warnings

Chennai, April. 30: Just enough to get by quickly, cleanlyYou are possibly not one of those who would like to memorise long strings of computer commands while washing your hair. Nor do you perhaps like to randomly press keys in the hope of discovering hidden, undocumented features of Vista, the latest Windows version from Microsoft. Instead, like most computer users, you want to know just enough to get by quickly, cleanly, and with a minimum of pain so that you can move on to more pleasant things in life. If so, Andy Rathbones Windows Vista for Dummies, from Wiley India should be the right fit for you.

But first, you may ask, Should I bother switching to Vista? If your XP is running just fine, you probably wont need the new product, says the author. You may yet like to consider the improved features that Vista offers. Such as, security (Defender program constantly searches your PC for any spyware), new Internet Explorer (with tabbed browsing, phishing filter, built-in search box and RSS feeds), and DVD burning (though more than five years after DVD burners hit the market).

Watch out, Microsoft is sneaky, even while touting Windows as your helpful computing companion, always keeping your best interests in mind. Windows always keeps Microsofts interests in mind, says Rathbone. Youll find that out as soon as you call Microsoft for help on making Windows work right. Your first two questions are free if you up the long distance charges to Redmond, Washington. The third call (and all the rest) cost $35 a piece, but prices may change at any time.
