MBA Academics Programmes

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) of IITM, is a two year full-time eight quarter programme aimed at training graduates into capable managers. The purpose of the Programme is to provide value addition through Management inputs to graduates and thereby contribute towards the societal needs and concern for managerial talents.

The focus of the Programme is on emerging areas such as Information Technology Management and International Business apart from the various functional areas of Management.

The programme aims:

To develop business advisers with a holistic perspective, versatile in the functional areas, specialised in some domains of application, and with a capability to lead business organisations towards achieving excellence in all their activities.

To develop students into managers who are capable of making significant contributions to teams and organizations, To train them to recognise, analyse, understand and solve complex problems in business, industrial and other socio-technical systems.

To develop the overall personality and capability through inputs on concepts, skills, tools, techniques and practical knowledge, and to prepare them to serve as intelligent, creative and rational managers. To give practical exposure to real life problem solving through industrial training and live projects.

The Admission Process:

Admission to the MBA Programme at IIT Madras is through a two step process.

1)The first step is the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET).
2)The second step of the selection process consists of a group-task and personal interview.The results of the JMET is used to short-list candidates for this step .

The final selection will be based on:

1)The performance in JMET
2)The performance in the interviews and the group task
3)The previous academinc performance
4)Work experience, if any

A maximum of 60 students will be admitted into the MBA programme, though the actual number admitted may be less. A maximum of 10 seats are earmarked for candidates sponsored by industry/ business organizations and NRI/ Foreign students. Seats are reserved for SC, ST and PH candidates as per the rules of Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria for MBA at IIT Madras

The minimum academic qualifications to apply for admission to the MBA Programme at IIT Madras is as follows:

1)B.E./ B.Tech. (or equivalent) with First Class (or equivalent) from a recognized Institution or University OR
2)A Master's degree with First Class (or equivalent) in any discipline from a recognized Institution or University.
3)Final year students are also eligible to apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be admitted provisionally, on the condition that they complete all requirements for the qualifying degree before the start of the programme and produce provisional certificate of completion within two months of joining the programme.

Sponsored Candidates:

Candidates may be sponsored by their employers to pursue an MBA at IIT Madras. They must have a minimum of two years of work experience in the sponsoring organisation. These candidates are exempted from the JMET. They will be selected on the basis of their performance in the interview & group task and a separate written test.

NRIs and Foreign Nationals:

NRIs and Foreign Nationals are exempted from the JMET, the interview and the group task. Their selection will depend on

1)Their GMAT score
2)Their academic record
3)Letters of reference and
4)Work experience, if any

Selection Process:

Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET)

The JMET is the first step in the process of securing admission to the MBA Progrmme at IIT Madras. It is the common entrance test for post-graduate programmes in management at all the IITs and IISc. However, the candidates will have to apply separately to each IIT and IISc as per their choices. One can apply to as many programs as desired. The eligibility requirements vary between institutes. These application forms and the details for each Institute are provided with the JMET booklet and brochure.

The JMET is usually conducted in December every year and the results of the test are announced a month later. The test dates are announced in all leading national newspapers around September each year. There are several test centers for the JMET that are spread all over the country.
