Chemical Engineering Department

Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Guwahati. Started in 2002, the department is a major academic host offering all degrees (B.Tech., M.Tech. & Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering. The department is endowed with young, vibrant and dynamic faculty well qualified to impart high quality teaching and research standards in conventional and frontier areas of chemical engineering. The research interests of the faculty vary broadly ranging from nano scale to meso scale systems/technology that may demand a collaborative approach with chemistry, material science, bio-technology, computing and electronics. Our broad vision aims to target and achieve coherence of chemical engineering with pure sciences and other engineering disciplines.

Dynamism

Though young, the department has set ideal standards for interaction with industry, academia and engineering professionals driving the necessity for fundamental and applied research. Within a span of three years, the department has organized three short term courses and national symposium SCHEMCON. Three sponsored projects have been awarded to competent faculty that can boost department research infrastructure. In the near future, we would anticipate to have more research funding in the form of sponsored and consultancy projects.

Modern Chemical engineering involves the economic transformation of raw-materials to valuable products with lowest possible environmental risk and hazards. Therefore, a chemical engineer should possess an all round competence in mathematics, chemistry, physics and economics in addition to the basics in engineering. Chemical engineering applications have wide spectrum including the production of petroleum products, petrochemicals, bulk chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, plastics and polymers. Frontier areas of chemical engineering research include microfluidics, microreactors, waste management, computer aided process decisions, smart material synthesis, nanotechnology, hydrogen energy, fuel cells, membranes, drug delivery systems, bio-chemical systems etc.

Location

IIT Guwahati, situated about 25 kms from Guwahati city is well connected to the city via the IIT bus route. The department is located at K block in the new academic building. The department is very nicely located near to the flowing waters of Brahmaputra river in a peaceful atmosphere very conducive for excellence in academics.

Layout

The departmental building (K block) is host to faculty office rooms and different laboratories. These labs constitute undergraduate laboratories (mechanical operations, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering, process control and thermodynamics lab), postgraduate laboratories (petroleum lab, analytical lab and research lab). In addition, the computer lab provides unique environment that involve computer aided chemical process engineering.
