Mathematics Department

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is one of the six higher Institutes of Technology in the country set up with `` Quality Education and Development of Linkage between Academia and User Community'', as one of the main objectives. Mathematics , being the language of Science, has played a key role in the Institute in achieving this objective. This has been realised by active individual involvement of faculty as well as collaborative efforts with premier institutes in India and abroad.

The Department of Mathematics is continuously fostering excellence in Research & Development in Mathematical Sciences through

  • Basic Research : Focused Research in contemporary areas of fundamental , developmental and strategical importance.
  • Interdisciplinary Research: Development of multidisciplinary research teams involving mathematicians and scientists/engineers in frontier areas of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Academic Interaction: Establishment of individual and institutional contacts between the Department of Mathematics and various Educational and Research & Development Organizations in the country such as major universities , TIFR, IISc, ISI, ISRO, DRDO, ONGC, IMD etc and other nodal organisations such as CSIR , DAE, DST etc for scientific exchange of ideas of national importance.
  • Doctoral Programme: Offers exciting and unique opportunity to scholars for pursuing research in Pure Mathematics , Applied Mathematics & Scientific Computing , Statistics & Operations Research and Theoretical Computer Science.

The Department is also engaged in imparting quality education via two strong Masters Programmes leading to degrees in Mathematics and Applied Statistics & Informatics. The Department would like to strengthen these programmes by

  • Creating special scholarships in the existing 2-year M.Sc. Programmes of the Department.
  • Sponsorship programme with CSIR , ISRO , DAE , BARC as potential sponsors-cum-partners.

In the ensuing years we also envisage International Collaboration with several universities around the world with common academic programmes at Masters level laying emphasis on joint project work , core courses and industrial interaction.

We foresee that the Research & Development Programme of the Department of Mathematics will lead to

  • Promotion of outstanding research in mathematical sciences.
  • Facilitation of interaction between scientists in India and abroad.
  • Emergence of avenues for retaining and attracting talented young Indian scientists and adapting their talents towards areas of national importance.

Also , we expect that the strengthened Academic Programmes in emerging areas will be unique ones in the country with good job potential along with good providers of inputs to our Doctoral Programme.
